Prisoners returning from the dead…

Even though ijji Games didn’t take advantage of the online first-person shooter they had under their wing known as Karma Online: Operation Barbarossa, Joymax was more than happy to pick up the tab that ijji had left behind and decided to relaunch Karma Online as Karma: Prisoners of War. Much of the game has stayed the same with the exception of some new maps, new weapons, new game modes and better compatibility. Find out how to take advantage of playing the game with this Karma Online beginner guide.

Unlocking Characters, Weapons And Goodies

When you start up the game the one thing you’ll notice that’s vastly different in Joymax version as opposed to ijji Games’ version of the game is that the character classes are no longer standards as they were before.

In the original game players picked between being a sniper, rifleman or a gunner, similar to ijji’s other shooters, Genesis A.D. or Alliance of Valiant Arms. Now, players can pick a character from the ones that they have unlocked and then equip the kind of guns, armor and items that best suit their play style. Take note that female characters and other class types must be unlocked by ranking up or purchasing them from the cash shop. If you don’t see the kind of character or weapons that you enjoy playing with don’t fret it just means you haven’t earned them as part of your stash yet.

Picking The Right Loadouts

One of the most important aspects of this new version of Karma is that loadouts will make or break your game. Unlike previous versions where you picked a specific character class and were good to go, you can actually unlock and open up customizable character slots that you can switch between during the game, which is perfect for situations that require multiple tactical classes. This setup is actually very similar to the setup of Combat Arms.

As you unlock new weapons you can choose what you can bring with you into combat, and this is where things get interesting. Depending on your play style you can actually load up on as many weapons as you have in your inventory if the character you’re playing has enough weight.

The thing is, the more weapons you equip the less room you’ll have for secondary items such as health kits, grenades and pistols. Alternatively, you could go into a match as a lightweight, equipping a small pistol and some medikits in order to get in, get a kill and get out very quickly. The RPG micromanagement ability really adds an extra edge of strategy to the game that’s usually missing from other online FPS titles

Map and Weapon Strategies

There are just over a handful of maps available in Karma Online: Prisoners of War with a variety of gameplay modes to boot. For the Infiltration (capture the flag) modes, it’s a matter of tactics over skill. While camping works fine it’s definitely not reliable when the goal is to take out the opposing team who is continually finding ways to infiltrate. Assault weapons with a little sniper support usually works well.

The co-op modes are just the opposite, when facing off against hordes of the undead. The objective is to go all out using guns with large clips or high powered weapons. When doing the domination modes against the zombies and other players sometimes it’s essential to have a player watch your team’s back to ensure that your opponents don’t sneak up from behind and lay waste to everyone. Alternatively, paying attention to the zombie spawn points is a good way to strategize a way to sneak up on opposing players to score some easy points.

Finding A Weapon That Works For You

Each gun on the game has its pros and cons. Unlike Brothers in Arms, though, Karma doesn’t restrict its weapons to more realistic conditions, which means that you don’t have to worry about highly inaccurate machine guns and unreliable sniper rifles. Instead, each gun category suits a sort of tactical purpose in the game, with LMGs being perfectly suitable for sustained suppression fire but having little or no accuracy for long range combat. Shotguns are exactly the same with the exception that you can’t afford to miss otherwise you’re dead meat, added to this the starter shotguns have very low fire rates and are easily susceptible to being outgunned by machine guns and LMGs.

One surprising gun category on the game is the sniper rifle, which is slightly more reliable than most sniper rifles in newer games even when you’re not scoped. This makes certain rifles like the M-14 a nice alternative as a mid-ranged rifle in addition to long range support.
