Patchworks - Review

Although this free online puzzle game seems a bit old fashioned dealing with quilting blocks, it's actually pretty addicting. Check out our review of Patchworks so you can see if you're up to the quilting challenge!

    Kind of run-of-the-mill...

I figured that I would stop with the sim games for a bit and try out some of the free online puzzle games on Shockwave games, and the first one that I came to that looked half-way decent was Patchworks. It 's one of their many free online games, so you do not have to download anything; not even some ActiveX control (which was nice)! Of course, after playing so many different Shockwave games out there I hold them to a higher standard than other free online games out there. So, after playing for a bit, here is my user's review of Patchworks.

    Patchworks Game Basics

There really is not much to the basics of the Patchworks game, except the object is to put the quilt patches together as quickly as possible. Of course, that is really the goal of many puzzle games, so that is not anything new. But, the quilt blocks get harder and harder as you go up levels. They add in tons of pieces of all different shapes and colors and sizes, which does make it hard to figure out sometimes where things go. You will know when you get something in the right spot if you pay attention, because the piece will slide back a bit from the others. If it is not in the right spot, it will just look like it does not fit there, like there is some little part of the background sticking out. The first few levels are pretty easy for a free online puzzle game, and the spaces where the quilt block pieces can go are pretty obvious. But, as you progress through the levels, and hit, oh, about level 10 or so, the quilt blocks start to get harder. They even get to the point that you second guess pieces that are already there! So, as a puzzle game goes, it is pretty challenging.

For someone who really does not like any type of puzzle games that deal with "fru-fru" stuff, like quilting is to me, I was actually surprised to find myself playing it until I just could not think about anything but puzzle pieces. At first I was just playing to get a feel for the game and write a good, solid review of it and then I caught myself playing just to see how high a level I could get to before I messed everything up. Plus, the online version of the game matches you against other player's scores so you know in the back of your head that you will be up against people from all over.

    Patchworks Game Graphics

The graphics on this free online puzzle game are ok but a little less than what I would have expected from Shockwave games. That's really all I can say about them. They are not spectacular, they do not just jump right out of the screen at you, but on the other hand, they are not terrible either. The detail in each piece of quilt block is pretty good, and some strike vivid memories of the 1970's, so someone put some time in there. So, I wouldn't count the graphics in this puzzle PC game a complete wipe out. The graphics in Patchworks from Shockwave games gets a 3 out of 5 as well.

    Overall Impression Of Patchworks

Overall, I am going to give Patchworks a solid 3 out of 5. Middle of the road, because I have seen better free online puzzle games (especially from Shockwave games), but then again, I have seen worse free online puzzle games too! So, if you just want a good solid puzzle game to play online for free, then Patchworks is a good game for you.
