The Sims 3 is the newest Sims version available, and has strived to make it more realistic, not just with better graphics and more activities available, but also with the life spans. If chosen, you can play characters for their normal life span (and celebrate their aging up with a Sims 3 birthday cake), or turn off the aging settings all together.
With The Sims 3, the expansion packs and stuff packs, you are able to immerse yourself in your Sim’s life with everything from their career, aspirations, lifetime wish, traits, family, friends, hobbies, cars, vacations, and much, much more!
Life Stages
Sims in The Sims 3 age up, just like in real life (unless you have the aging setting turned to off). To change age, a birthday cake isn’t needed, but is appreciated by the Sim. The number of Sim days in a lifespan can be changed in the settings, too.
Short – 25 days
Medium – 50 days
Normal – 90 days
Long – 190 days
Epic – 960 days
The default life phase time is:
Toddler – 7 days
Child – 7 days
Teen – 14 days
Young Adult – 21 days
Adult – 21 days
Elder – 17-25 days (vegetarians live longer)
Birthday Cakes
Birthday cakes in The Sims 3 are fun for family gatherings or parties in the game to celebrate a Sim’s aging up to their next life phase. These are used at the Sim’s party when they would age up, or it can be used ahead of time and will effectively age up your Sim to their next life phase.
It is also able to be used on any Sim that is on the lot, not just those in your Sim’s household. To do this, simply throw a party at a location (such as your house), and invite the Sim you want to age up. Then buy the cake, place on your lot (on a table) and then select “Blow out candles” and then select the Sim you want to age up. Birthday cakes may only be used once per Sim, a new one has to be bought and served for each occasion.

The Birthday Inferno Birthday cake is available for purchase (from the Buy Mode, Entertainment, Party section) and also from the Supermarket in your town. It costs $30, and if you change your mind and don’t want to age up the Sim, you can sell it for $26. The Birthday Inferno Birthday Cake is also available through traveling back to the past from the use of a Time Machine.
