The standard of the games being produced for our mobile phones nowadays has improved tremendously. You can get a wide range of action options that are truly great fun, from arcade style shooters set in space, to military shooters packed with exciting missions. There are some great zombie-themed options out there and you can also find some top quality fighting games.

Many of the big name franchises from the world of console and PC are making the transition to mobile and although the results are mixed, on the whole, they’re a welcome addition. In this guide we dive into the pile of action games for mobile phones and come up clutching a bundle that are worthy of your attention.

Great Game Round-Ups

Let’s begin with some round-ups of the best games to give you an action gaming fix. We have an essential top ten iPhone games for all you shooter addicts out there and we don’t leave the Android platform out either – we don’t even leave the Windows Phone 7 platform out.

There are some classic action options in our Capcom round-up including many classics you’ll remember from yesteryear. Devil May Cry, Resident Evil and 1942: First Strike are not to be missed. Everyone loves to repel alien invasions and you can’t go wrong with zombies and pirates. What more can you ask for? This is action gaming heaven.

Fantastic Titles Not to Be Missed

These are all individual games that you need to check out on your mobile. First up we go to ‘Nam with Call of Duty: Black Ops. It may not compare with the PC title, but you can play through these missions on iPhone, BlackBerry or Nokia phones. If you’re really craving some military style shooter action then you’ll find Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus on the iPhone is much better than the CoD spin-off.

Next it’s time for some zombie mayhem as you use the iPhone accelerometer to squish zombies and try to avoid pranging your car. We’re not done with zombies yet (yes we like zombies around here) because the next game is all about trying to defend your neighbourhood and stay alive for as long as you can. Zombieville USA is button-mashing madness that never ends. We’re still not done with zombies but the side-scrolling Zombieland movie spin-off is our last one….I promise.

You’ll have to think fast if you want to avoid those incoming tackles in Backbreaker Football. Find out what this unusual title has to offer in our review.

Prince of Persia offers an exciting action adventure and Street Fighter IV is unparalleled as a beat ‘em up on mobile. While Street Fighter IV offers that classic fighting action you remember wrestling fans are going to prefer TNA iMPACT because it’s packed with famous wrestling stars each with their own signature style.

I’m sure most of you have heard of the Splinter Cell franchise and it makes an appearance on iPhone with Conviction. Check out the review to see if it does Fisher’s adventures justice. Dead Space is a terrifically absorbing iPhone horror that you should definitely check out.

Our final review covers the unmissable Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, you won’t find many games better than this on the iOS platform, but it is for adults only.

Windows Phone 7 Titles

If you have a WP7 device then you’ll enjoy the sci-fi themed arcade action in The Harvest. Rise of Glory is a flight-sim shooter with a WWI backdrop for Windows Phone 7. While we’re on WP7, here’s another famous franchise gone mobile – Assassin’s Creed. Find out if it’s worth the price tag in our review. If you’d prefer a quick blast of frenetic action then Rocket Riot will appeal.

Guides and Tips

If you love blowing things up then you’re probably familiar with Fragger already. Whether you’re a newcomer or a veteran this guide will offer you some handy hints to help you blow away those targets. Our second guide deals with the popular Swords and Soldiers title on iOS. This side-scrolling RTS is packed with colourful action and you can get a step up on your enemies with this guide.
